Countryside Ranger Trainee (Kickstart) x 2
6-month placement from May 2021
National Minimum Wage
25 hours per week
Whitlingham Country Park is proudly working with the Youth Hostel Association as part of the new government-funded Kickstart Scheme. The scheme provides funding to create new job placements for 16 to 24 year olds who are on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment.
You are only eligible to apply for a Kickstart role if you:
- are aged 16 to 24 years old
- are claiming Universal Credit
- have been allocated a Work Coach with Jobcentre Plus
Our kickstart employees will work with other staff and volunteers to maintain the 280 acres of Country Park. This includes condition monitoring, repairing footpaths, gates and bridges. Seasonal tasks include mowing, coppicing, hedge laying, planting and tree safety work.
Rangers work with volunteers to run seasonal events and provide volunteering opportunities for students and the harder to reach groups that may not have access to the countryside.
As the eyes and ears of the park you provide a contact between visitors, local people, stakeholders and local communities.
Practical skills are a good start, but the Ranger role is public facing and very often you are called upon to deal with difficult situations, anything from injured wildlife to illegal fishing.
Some of the skills required are listed below.
- customer service skills
- the ability to work well with others
- excellent verbal communication skills
- the ability to use your initiative
- to be flexible and open to change
- prepared to work in all weather and conditions
The Ranger role can be challenging but if you are prepared to work hard it offers great variety and reward.
To apply, you must contact your Work Coach at Jobcentre Plus for a referral.
Anticipated start date: May 4th 2021
Deadline for applications 1700 22nd April
Interviews will take place on the 27th April at Whitlingham Country Park.
