Giving Himalayan balsam the heave-ho

If you haven't heard of it, Himalayan balsam is a plant (pictured below) which was introduced to Britain as an ornamental species as it has pretty pink, scented flowers. It has now spread along Britain's watercourses and is problematic as it takes over where British native species should thrive. It has to be pulled out by hand to control its spread. It multiplies quickly, if left unchecked, because the seeds explode out from the ripe pods, so it has to be caught early. Luckily, our dedicated volunteers are up for the challenge. Look at how much has they pulled up in recent weeks!
