Walking through a peaceful meadow on a summer's day, a butterfly flutters gently past, catching your eye, raising a smile... but what if that wonderful experience is becoming less common?

Following the results of the Big Butterfly Count 2024, Butterfly Conservation have declared a butterfly emergency, and we need your help more than ever before.

Above quote from Butterfly Conservation - a registered charity

They say that this UK wide survey is vital to assess the health of the butterfly population in the UK.

You can help!

The Big Butterfly Count 2025 runs from 18th July to 10th August

Easy ways to support this campaign:

  1. Choose a place to do your survey - it could be a garden, allotment or even here at Whitlingham Country Park!

  2. Sign up and download the butterfly identification chart from the Butterfly Conservation website (where there are full details and instructions)

  3. Observe for 15 minutes on any day between 18th July and 10th August

  4. Send in your results on their website. Simple!

Did you know, you can join in with their free app too?

Day-flying moths count too! What will you see? It could be some of these if you're at Whitlingham Country Park for your count:

Which butterflies are you likely to spot at Whitlingham Country Park?

Great thanks to James Emerson who documents the Whitlingham wildlife sightings for us. The full species lists can be found here on his website, but below is the list from his 'butterflies' species guide:

We can't wait to see the results of this year's survey, and hopefully an upturn in butterfly numbers.

Thank you for showing your support and for being a friend to the butterflies! 🦋
